Police in Danville, Ky., foiled an attempt to rob a barbecue restaurant when one of the two men allegedly plotting the heist pocket dialled 911 while discussing their plans.
On top of not realizing their conversation was being overheard by authorities, they didn’t realize the police chief was inside the restaurant that they were targeting.
“There was some conversation about when they should do it,” Police Chief Anthony Gray told the Advocate Messenger. “I think they did talk about some different locations.”
Brothers BBQ owner Mike Southerland saw the entire scene unfold as another officer approached Gray and informed him of the situation.
Authorities were able to triangulate the location of the cellphone that was connected to 911, and found the two men sitting in a car in the restaurant’s parking lot.
Southerland told NBC affiliate LEX18 that he was shocked to see that the suspects were two of his customers.
According to public records, both men were released on charges of public intoxication (second offenses for each); one of the men was also charged with second-degree disorderly conduct.
Gray believes the men were just drunk and not intending to commit a robbery.
Southerland said both men are no longer welcome at his restaurant.
