Thief tries to steal running car with family inside at Calgary mall

Calgary police are investigating after they said someone tried to steal a running car with a woman and two children inside from a mall parking lot in the city’s northeast.

According to police, a man left his wife and two kids in the backseat of a running car when he ran into a Mary Brown’s Famous Chicken restaurant in the parking lot of Marlborough Mall at around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

They said a man then jumped in and tried to steal the vehicle and drove it for about 300 metres before noticing the family in the backseat. Police said at that point the suspect abandoned the car in the same parking lot before getting into a cab.

Nobody was injured in the incident and police said they were working with the taxi companies to locate the man.

It’s unknown if the incident could be related to an attempted carjacking at the same mall just one day before.
