Thanks to a quick thinking neighbour, Cocquit didn’t swim to the distressed animal, but instead the two found a nearby canoe to reach the Border Collie named Aspen.

But had his neighbour not come along, Cocquit said he would have attempted the swim, having waded in to his hips to begin the journey.

“The water wasn’t nearly as cold as you would have thought,” said Cocquit.

On video of the incident, his neighbour Bill Varner is heard saying Cocquit will drown before he got to the animal.

Aspen was brought in and her tag helped locate a very grateful owner.

“They were very thankful and took the dog to the vet to get checked out,” he said.

Cocquit said the owners later called back to say Aspen was doing well, curled up at their feet keeping warm into the evening.

The entire episode was caught on Cocquit’s cell phone he set up, on a lark, at the edge of his waterfront deck.
