A Penticton man is facing numerous charges after a break-and-enter at a local school.
RCMP say a suspect allegedly used a shotgun to blast open a door at the Ecole Entre Lacs, a French immersion school, at around 5 a.m. on Sunday.
Corporal Don Wrigglesworth says police were called to the school at 1077 Nelson Avenue by a security company. Wrigglesworth says when police arrived they found a man sitting inside the school smoking a cigarette with a shotgun allegedly laying beside him. He was arrested on scene and remains in police custody.
Police say the man broke into the school following a domestic dispute at a nearby residence. Police allege the shotgun was also discharged at the home causing damage to a telephone and television.
59-year-old Yvon Martel is now facing numerous charges related to the incident. They include break-and-enter, assault, reckless discharge of a firearm and using a firearm with intent.
He’ll make a court appearance on Dec. 28.
Police say Martel has no connection to the school other than residing nearby.
