A man claiming to have witnessed the incident described the whole thing as weird.
Todd Gallant told Global News he was on his way to work and was stopped at a red light in the right-hand lane along southbound Macleod Trail near 194 Avenue just before 11 a.m. Gallant said an SUV stopped beside him in the lane on his left with a white van behind the SUV.
As they waited for the light to change, Gallant said he saw a man get out of the driver side of the SUV, and approach the driver side of the van that was behind the SUV.
In a phone conversation Tuesday afternoon, Gallant said he didn’t think anything of it at first, until he saw the white van shaking.
He said he witnessed a younger man jump out of the passenger side of the SUV and run to the driver side of the van where he described an altercation taking place.
Global News spoke with the driver of the van, Jonathan Steel, who said he was driving along southbound Macleod Trail when he noticed the SUV behind him before it pulled up beside him and seemingly tried to run him off the road. Steel said the SUV eventually stopped in the left-hand turn lane at a red light when two people jumped out of that same vehicle and approached his door.
He said one of the men opened his door and started to hit him before trying to pull him out of his vehicle.
Global News has learned EMS arrived on scene first and told everyone police were on their way, at which point the two men from the SUV allegedly jumped back into their vehicle and left the scene.
Calgary police’s HAWCS helicopter was called in to help officers search for a vehicle that left the scene. It was later pulled over on Fairmont Drive S.E. Police said they took two men into custody – a 53-year-old father and his 18-year-old son.
The two men are facing a total of six charges including assault and dangerous driving.
