Antoni’s body was found in the basement of her Castleridge home in October 2015. The grisly discovery was made by her husband, Lee, who had been out of town for several days.

“We’re always thinking about how alone she was and how scared she must have been,” Antoni’s brother Darrell Hogg said.

Initially, police said Antoni’s death was suspicious with signs of violence in the home.

“The cause of death is blunt force trauma and there’s several ways that could happen,” Calgary Police Insp. Don Coleman explained in an interview with Global News in July. “There’s things with the scene that could be construed as violence or accidental.”

“It’s a very unique case, very strange. They had to bring other agencies in, profilers, biomechanics — all kinds of different things,” Hogg explained.

Despite the ruling, Antoni’s family still has many questions.

“The hardest part on the whole family is knowing that she didn’t die instantly. Why didn’t she come back up the stairs if she was conscious and alive down there?”
