Old man winter has reached Saskatchewan and he’s here to stay. But the cold weather can wreak havoc on your home. Here’s a couple things to keep in mind during the deep freeze
According to Centennial Plumbing, Heating and Electric owner Michael Shaw the first thing to do is “check out your furnace and make sure your filter is clear.”
“Just the resistance of build up on the filter could shut down your furnace and give you no heat,” he said from the Centennial showroom in Saskatoon.

He added that for high efficiency furnaces, it’s important to check the venting on the side of your home to make sure there are no obstructions like built-up snow or ice, which could clog the vent and shut down the furnace.
“If you have an old furnace you want to make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector because if it’s running and not all of the exhaust is going out of your house, that’s a major safety concern,” Shaw said.

It’s also important to shut off all water to the outside of the home and disconnect hoses.
“Disconnect the hoses and make sure the shut off valve is closed to the outside tap. That way if it’s frozen and there are leaks at this point then it wouldn’t cause a flood back to your house.”
It’s also the season for vacations, so make sure if you’re going away to have someone check your home daily.
