Fallen RCMP officer remembered at funeral

Thousands of police officers from around western Canada, Washington State and as far away as Australia remembered Cst. Adrian Oliver at his funeral.

The Surrey Mountie comes from a family of RCMP officers. He met his life partner, Cst. Shelagh Mitchell, during RCMP training and his brother is also in the force.

“Adrian, your kindness inspires me to be a better person, your goofiness reminds me to be a kid at heart and your dedication reminds me to be the best at what I do,” said Cst. Mitchell.

His twin brother, Cst. Benjamin Oliver added, “Thank you for showing me how to be a better brother, friend, son and person.”

RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson said Oliver embodied the values the RCMP holds dear.

“Adrian had the courage to pursue this career and the strength to succeed,” he said.

“He is exactly the kind of member that makes this force the national institution it is.”

Cst. Oliver was killed one week ago after his police cruiser was hit by semi-truck while on duty.

Prior to the service, officers walked in a rain-soaked procession lasting about an hour before filing into the Langley Events Centre.

Oliver’s family requested a full regimental funeral, which is second only to a state funeral.

His casket was draped in a Canadian flag and carried into the Centre by his fellow officers dressed in traditional red serge.

Oliver was born in Williams Lake, B.C in 1984 and has family as far away as Cape Breton and Louisiana.
