Man barricaded in Halifax home surrenders

A 38-year-old man who was barricaded inside a residence in Fairview has surrendered to police after more than 17 hours.

Police went to a home on Ashdale Avenue shortly after 9 a.m. on Friday to arrest a man wanted on an outstanding charge.

Police say the man pulled a knife on the officer who approached him.

Dozens of heavily armed officers, including members of the Emergency Response Team surrounded the residence for hours, negotiating with the man.

The entire time, the suspect was broadcasting on the internet using Facebook Live. He could be seen looking out the window at police, smoking and making food.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday, the man walked out of the home and was taken into custody.

A large portion of Titus Street, Alma Crescent, Dutch Village Road and Ashdale Avenue were blocked to traffic throughout the ordeal.

The man’s name is not being publicly released at this time. He has been remanded in custody for the weekend and will appear in court Monday to face charges of assaulting a police officer with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breach of court order.
