City council has approved renaming a dog park in the city’s southeast in honour of a former alderman, but not everyone agrees with the decision.
The Southland dog park will be named after Sue Higgins, one of the most colourful politicians in Calgary’s history.
She represented southeast Calgary for over 20 years and sat on more than 50 civic committees.
She is now in a longterm care facility after having surgery for lung cancer.
But those familiar with the history of the park believe the renaming honour should go to a woman who successfully fought plans to turn the park into a golf course.
Nora Tuckey received several ci
vic awards for her volunteer work to preserve the park as a natural area. She died last year of ALS.
“I think it’s just an injustice, a non- legacy for the Tuckey family,” says Nola Kirby. “They were always down here always picking up. I’m just sad .”

However, there are plans to dedicate a corner of the park to Nora Tuckey along with a bench and public art.
In a written statement, the Tuckey family expresses their gratitute for the memorial, adding “We hope Calgary citizens continue to visit the park and the grove, and that they are inspired to make a difference as both Nora Tuckey and Sue Higgins have done.”
