At a press conference at the Jewish General Hospital Monday afternoon, Barrette said the aim of reopening operating rooms is to reduce wait times.

This will allow up to  22,444 more operations to be carried out each year but conditions apply.

To access the funds hospital networks must balance their operating room budgets.

“I’m putting pressure on the hospitals that do not balance their budgets,” Barrette said. “Hospitals will have to engage themselves to manage their operating rooms [and] operating theaters correctly.”

However, Barrette did not say how long hospitals will have to get their books in order.

Each hospital network could have access to $1.2 million to reopen equipped operating rooms, Barrette said.
