A developing low pressure system over southeastern North Dakota will slowly move north and stall over the state today, dumping snow that will continue through Wednesday.

Winds will also strengthen causing some reduced visibility in blowing snow at times.

Environment Canada says to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

The agency has also issued a special weather statement for the Yorkton, Kamsack, Canora, Estevan and Weyburn areas for a return to winter conditions with five to 15 centimetres of snow possible by Wednesday along with reduced visibilities and blowing snow possible at times.

Today

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Mist reduced visibility overnight down to 1.2 kilometres and stuck around right through the morning with temperatures hovering near the dewpoint, around -4 to -3 degrees.

Visibility did improve to up to six kilometres as the sun rose along with temperatures, that pushed up to -2 by noon.

Freezing drizzle moved into the city over the noon hour, causing the already icy streets to become even more slick.

Be sure to give yourself extra time to travel to your destination today as roads remain quite icy.

Cool, breezy northerly winds up to 30 km/h have kept it feeling like -9 to -10 with wind chill throughout the day, a trend that’s expected to continue through the rest of the day as temperatures won’t warm up too much further under cloudy skies for the rest of the day.

Tonight

The strengthening low pressure system south of the boarder will continue to keep northerly winds pumping in during the night.

There’s a chance of flurries overnight as the system edges closer and temperatures drop back into mid-minus single digits.

Tuesday

Saskatoon will be on the very edge of the low pressure system bringing heavy snow to southeast Saskatchewan, but we will tap into some light snow tomorrow morning into the middle of the day before it eases off later on.

2 to 4 centimetres is a reasonable amount to expect in the Saskatoon area by Wednesday.

-12 is around what it’ll feel like tomorrow morning with wind chill as northeasterly winds strengthen along with the system during the day with sustained speeds around 20 to 30 km/h with gusts upwards of 40 to 50 km/h at times.

Those winds will make for a cool day with the mercury only rising to around -2 or -3, but wind chill values making it feel into or close to minus double digits all day.

Wednesday-Friday

Then behind the system we’ll remain cool and cloudy Wednesday and Thursday with a slight chance of flurries before we finally should get some clearing and a few sunny breaks on Friday between systems.

Daytime highs through the period look to stay in the -3 to -4 degree range, which is still reasonable given that our high for this time of the year is -5 to -6.

Weekend Outlook

A system looks like it’ll slide by south of the city on Saturday that’ll further propel temperatures downward from a high just a few degrees below freezing that day under partly to mostly cloudy skies, back to a morning low in minus double digits and afternoon high in mid-minus single digits on Sunday with a mix of sun and cloud expected at this point.
