A man in his 50s died after falling into the Bow River near the Graves Bridge Monday afternoon.
The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) told Global News a fisherman fell into the river near the Graves Bridge around 1 p.m. Monday. Another man who was also fishing in the area witnessed the incident and noticed the victim was unable to get himself up and out of the water.
According to a news release Monday, the CFD said the second fisherman went in after the victim who was being swept away by the current and was submerged under the water.
The second fisherman pulled the victim to the shore and performed CPR until help arrived.
In a release Monday afternoon EMS said the victim, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital in critical, life-threatening condition. Global News has since confirmed the victim died.
The rescuer was assessed by the CFD and was determined to be cold but uninjured.
The CFD said the rescuer put himself at risk and his efforts will likely earn him a nomination for recognition at the annual “Beyond the Call” luncheon.
Crews are investigating what caused the man to fall into the river.
It is believed the two men did not know one another.
