The Canadians were ahead of the odds walking into the event at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.

Drake led the nominations with 13 nods, breaking Michael Jackson’s record for most AMA nominations in a single year. Jackson was up for 11 in 1984.

Justin Bieber was also in a good position, up for five awards including Artist of the Year, a category he shared with Drake.

In the end, both won their respective artist, song and album of the year awards for their genres.
