Canadian artists Drake and Justin Bieber took home some of the top awards at the 2016 American Music Awards (AMA) Sunday night.
The Canadians were ahead of the odds walking into the event at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles.
Drake led the nominations with 13 nods, breaking Michael Jackson’s record for most AMA nominations in a single year. Jackson was up for 11 in 1984.
Justin Bieber was also in a good position, up for five awards including Artist of the Year, a category he shared with Drake.
In the end, both won their respective artist, song and album of the year awards for their genres.
Prince won a posthumous award securing Top Soundtrack for his album Purple Rain. The 1984 album was eligible because of a resurgence in popularity after Prince’s death in April.
His sister accepted the award on his behalf and was given a standing ovation.
