Kelowna can boast to having the most firearms surrendered during last month’s province-wide gun amnesty.
The month long campaign ran through October and Kelowna RCMP are calling it a success.
Police say a total of 109 unwanted firearms were surrendered during the campaign including 51 rifles, 20 handguns and 15 shotguns. They say some of the other weapons surrendered included pellet guns, replica and antique firearms.
“RCMP in Kelowna are pleased to see that residents seem to recognize that unwanted weapons in homes are a potential hazard,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “The weapons seized could have led to a tragic outcome if they had fallen into the wrong hands, such as a small child or criminal.”
O’Donaghey said the number of firearms surrendered in the Kelowna and region surpassed any other municipality in B.C.
Across the province, a total of 1,184 firearms were surrendered during the amnesty.
