Alberta MLAs vote to publicize their food, travel, hotel bills

EDMONTON – Alberta politicians have voted unanimously to adopt a new policy to publicize the travel, hotel, and meal expenses of all members of the legislature.

As of January 1, all 87 members are to disclose the reasons for their expenses, the amounts, and receipts.

That information will then be made public four times a year, starting in April.

The motion was passed at a meeting of the all-party member services committee after it was introduced by Progressive Conservative whip Steve Young.

Liberal leader Raj Sherman moved an amendment to broaden the disclosures to cover all expenses, not just those relating to hosting and travel.

He later withdrew it after other committee members agreed it may be a good idea, but more research is needed on how it would work.
