MONTREAL – The victim in an apparent gangland-style slaying in Blainville Sunday night was Joseph Di Maulo, the Sûreté du Québec said Monday morning.
Di Maulo was said, by the National Parole Board, to be an influential member of the Montreal Mafia.
“He was found with no signs of life” on de Blainvillier St., in a residential section of Blainville, north of Montreal, SQ Sgt. Martine Asselin said.
Sgt. Daniel Thibodeau of the SQ later confirmed that Di Maulo had been slain outside his home.

“We can’t confirm for now” that Di Maulo had been shot, Asselin said. Thibodeau wouldn’t confirm that information either.
The initial report to local police was made at 9:15 p.m., Asselin said. They quickly called in the SQ to run the investigation, she said: “As soon as it was confirmed to be a suspicious death, it was transferred.”
Di Maulo was married to a sister of Raynald Desjardins, who police consider a major figure on the organized-crime scene.
Di Maulo was 70, Asselin said.
He had been alleged last year to have been part of a group that was trying to reach a consensus over who should assume control over the local mob.
In 2004, a National Parole Board decision allowed Vincenzo Di Maulo, older brother of the slain man, to be released on day parole.
In that decision, the board prohibited the brother from meeting with known criminals “related to the drug milieu and/or organized crime, including your brother Joe Di Maulo, who is known to be an influential member of the Montreal Mafia.”
