A cyclist is dead and two more are in serious condition after they and three others were hit by a car in Richmond Sunday morning.
The hit occurred around 10 a.m. in the area where River Road meets Westminster Highway, which is a popular route for cyclists. The cyclists were heading eastbound when the vehicle, a 2013 Lexus travelling in the opposite direction, struck the group head-on.
Richmond RCMP confirm that one 33-year-old victim has died. Two other victims have been transported to hospital: a 39-year-old from Vancouver is in critical condition, while a 46-year-old, also from Vancouver, is in serious condition. All three victims are from Vancouver. Three more cyclists have minor injuries and have not been taken to hospital. All six of the cyclists were male.
The driver, a 19-year-old male from Burnaby, has remained on the scene and is being cooperative with police. He did not sustain any injuries. The vehicle involved can be seen to have sustained front end damage.
Police are still attempting to identify the cause of the crash. RCMP noted in their release that this is the second fatality in Richmond within the last week.
