Man, 31, dies after ‘interaction’ with Toronto police involving stun gun: SIU

The province’s police watchdog is investigating the death of 31-year-old man allegedly armed with two knives, after an “interaction” with officers in Toronto led to a stun gun being deployed.

Toronto Police Const. Victor Kwong said officers responded to a report of a man “screaming and waving” two knives Friday on Sagres Crescent, in the St. Clair Avenue and Old Weston Road area.

Kwong said police arrived on scene and an “interaction” between the suspect and police occurred. The SIU said a stun gun was used by one of the officers and the man went into medical distress.

Toronto Paramedic Services spokeswoman Kim McKinnon said the man was then transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said it had been called to investigate the man’s death and more details would be available later. He was pronounced dead in hospital.

The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault.
