Calgary police charge driver after woman hit by car dies in hospital

Police have charged a 70-year-old Calgary woman following a deadly collision in the community of Hawkwood this summer.

It happened in the 0-100 block of Hawkwood Drive N.W. at around 10:15 a.m. on July, 28. Police said a woman was reversing out of her driveway in a Honda CRV when she struck a pedestrian walking on the sidewalk.

The victim, a 56-year-old woman, was rushed to hospital in critical life-threatening condition. She died less than a month later.

On Friday, police announced Sharon Lynne Shwed, 70, is charged with one count each of careless driving and unsafe backing.

Speed and alcohol were not considered to be factors in this collision.
