Smyth has worked with the Winnipeg police for more than 30 years, and served as deputy chief of investigative services.

Former police chief, Devon Clunis served in the role since November 2012, after spending 25 years with the Winnipeg police. He retired in July of 2016.

“I look forward to continued community engagement,” Smyth said. “Healthy engagement with the community is vital for our service, and getting to know the people that make up our diverse neighbourhoods enables us to better understand the problems they are confronted with.”
