A Sante Fe, New Mexico police officer’s body camera captured the moment he rescued an 87-year-old woman from a burning car.
Police say the elderly woman was driving to see her doctor at Christus St. Vincent Hospital on Oct. 28, with a flat tire.
“She was going to the doctors office and apparently had a flat tire along the way and kept driving on it. And by driving on it, it caused friction and heat,” Greg Gurule, a public information officer with Sante Fe police told Global News.

Officer Jimmy Madison was responding to another call when he noticed the car tire smoking. By the time he was able to pull the woman over, the car was on fire.

“She pulled up in front of the hospital. That’s when he takes over and gets her out,” Gurule said.
In the video, the woman, who has not been identified, looks confused and frazzled when the officer was saving her. She repeatedly asked for her cane.
“Truthfully it seemed like she must have had a little bit of dementia. She was more worried about her cane than her car being on fire,” Gurule said.
Madison was able to pull her out and reportedly put out the fire.
Police say the woman inhaled some smoke but is doing well.
