The school learned Friday that at least a few of the condoms being offered for free as part of a health initiative had been damaged by an unknown person.

“[A] person was seen poking holes in a wrapped condom,” said Darren McDonald, a spokesperson for the university. “All [the condoms] have been removed, and we don’t have any plans right now to replace them.”

The person tampering with the condoms was seen in the men’s bathroom of the student union building at the Abbotsford campus. Condoms were also made available at the Peer Resource and Leadership Centre and the Baker House residence reception area in Abbotsford, and the Student Life lounge at the Chilliwack campus. Over 250 condoms have now been recalled.

University staff is asking anyone who picked up a condom on campus between Sept. 1 and Friday to discard them immediately.

The school is currently investigating the situation and do not have any suspects.

Staff members are urging anyone with information regarding the tampering or anyone with questions or concerns to confidentially contact info.studentservices@ufv.ca. Anyone affected by this incident who has an immediate health concern is advised to visit their family doctor or a nearby medical clinic.
