Former NBA star Steve Nash is looking to have his name removed from 21 Fitness World locations in B.C.
In a notice of civil claim, Nash alleges there was a breach of contract between his company and the company currently running the facilities.
In a media statement from Steve Nash Fitness Clubs, it says the company has not been served with the civil claim.
“We are saddened that Mr. Nash proceeded to litigation without first raising any of these issues with us directly. While we have nothing but respect for Mr. Nash and what he has accomplished as a Canadian athlete, we are confident with our legal position and intend to aggressively defend our rights.”
The statement continues to say:
“In due course, the company will establish before the courts that it has the lawful and exclusive right, pursuant to written agreements signed by Mr. Nash personally, to use Mr. Nash’s name, voice, signature, likeness, and image within British Columbia in the operation of its business.”
The fitness centre started in Vancouver in 2007 and two years later became a chain, expanding across the province.
The company says it will not make any further comments as the matter is now before the courts.
