Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner byelection 2016: Libertarian Party candidate Sheldon Johnston

Sheldon Johnston, Libertarian Party candidate for the Medicine Hat, Cardston, Warner by-election riding. Sheldon Johnston

Libertarian Party byelection candidate for the riding of Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner (Alta.), Sheldon Johnston, believes he is the “voice of the majority.”

Global News reporter Erik Mikkelsen asked Johnston a few questions we thought voters would like to know. Here’s a full transcript below:

Erik Mikkelsen: Tell us a little about yourself. What is your background and experience in politics?

Sheldon Johnston: I have worked for several years in church ministry and most recently, as a corporate chaplain with several businesses in Medicine Hat. I was the former deputy leader of a provincial party in Saskatchewan, served on student council at the University of Regina and have served in various capacities with a number of parties in various election campaigns.

EM: Why did you decide to run for this byelection?

SJ: I decided to run because I feel that small “c” conservatism is not being well represented in Ottawa.  The previous government ratcheted up tremendous debt leaving the current government little alternative but to drive up taxes. I have felt for years that the Conservative party has been drifting to the political centre and that someone needs to represent the voice of the majority in this riding.

EM: What do you believe is the biggest issue affecting constituents in your riding?

SJ: The biggest issues of this byelection are the economy and jobs.  The coming green taxes will have a devastating effect on this region, as well as the lack of progress in advancing the development of our pipeline access to tidewater.  While Conservatives like leadership candidate Michael Chong support the idea of pricing carbon, the majority in this riding do not want an additional tax that will crush small businesses.

EM: If elected, what can your constituents expect from you?

SJ: If elected, I will work hard to represent all constituents with three offices throughout the riding. I will lobby hard for a reduction in federal personal and business taxes.  I will also work hard to represent the Libertarian ideals of smaller government, less taxes and more personal freedom.
