The New Democrat Party (NDP) byelection candidate for the riding of Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner (Alta.), Beverly Waege, believes she will be “a strong voice in Ottawa,” on local issues, should she be elected.
Global News reporter Erik Mikkelsen asked Waege a few questions we thought voters would like to know. Here’s a full transcript below:
Erik Mikkelsen: Tell us a little about yourself. What is your background and experience in politics?
Beverly Weage: I grew up in Kelowna, B.C., moved to Dunmore, Alta. in 1999 where I still live today. I work in the retail sector and am an active member of UFCW 401. I volunteer with the Girl Guides of Canada Sparks program. I ran in the May 2015 provincial election for the NDP.
EM: Why did you decide to run for this byelection?
BW: I would like to be the voice of all the people in our riding and stand up for our local voices in Ottawa. I also believe in NDP policies and in the voice they give to the concerns of every day Canadians.
EM: What do you believe is the biggest issue affecting constituents in your riding?
BW: In 1977, pay equity was first declared a human right, yet today, Canadian women continue to make just 77 cents for every dollar a man makes. New Democrats are calling for pay equity legislation now to close the wage gap. It’s time to deliver and realize true economic equality for women.
EM: If elected, what can your constituents expect from you?
BW: They can expect a strong voice in Ottawa speaking about local issues. I’ll also try my best to get things done on their behalf.
