A Calgary police officer shot and killed a man who confronted him with a weapon in the community of Sundance Tuesday morning.
Officers arrived in the 0-100 block of Sunmount Crescent S.E. just after 11 a.m. after receiving a call from the area in which screaming could be heard before the call was disconnected.
One neighbour who spoke with Global News said she knew of three people who lived in the home where the incident occurred; two elderly people and their grandson.
Police said officers arrived to find an injured man outside of a home in the area.
“Police were confronted by a second man with a weapon in the detached garage of the residence,” a Tuesday news release said. “A Calgary police member fired their weapon and the man was struck.”
The man shot by police was declared dead at the scene.
The injured man was taken to hospital in stable, non-life threatening condition. Global News has learned the man was attacked with a hammer.
Calgary Police Chief Roger Chaffin said he believes the officer did “the best he could” in the circumstance he was in.
“When we go to difficult calls like this, where there’s an extreme amount of violence and sort of the chaos you experience in the initial moments of the call, things change quickly,” Chaffin said. “I think it was a very short period of time from the time he actually entered the garage until it was concluded with a shot.”
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been notified and is expected to comment Wednesday.
