First Edmonton Expo being hailed a huge success

Over 7,000 people let their inner geek shine at the first ever Edmonton Expo, Sunday.

Edmonton’s newest comic con event was held at the Edmonton Expo Centre this weekend.

Thousands of gamers, comic collectors, and graphic artists took part in the event, some even dressed up for the occasion.

“I’m a geek,” said comic con fan Clinton Ouderkirk adding, “Normally, if you’re a geek you’re kind of off to the side. Well, this is room full of geeks, so it’s a level playing field.”

Almost 150 vendors, exhibitors, and artists were selling their products, including BioWare- an Edmonton based company known world wide for their gaming software.

“This audience is a large part of our core audience so, getting out and meeting our fans, getting feedback from them and talking to them is an important part of what we do, and there’s so many here it’s a must attend for us,” said Christ Priestly, BioWare community specialist.

Other smaller vendors say it’s a great way to get their name and products out to a large number of people.

“It helps bring a lot of awareness to a lot of these small companies, especially the artists because, they all have websites but, there are so many artists and so much competition you probably wouldn’t know about a lot of them unless you came to something like this. So, I think it’s really good for the local scene,” said Jason Soprovich with Cherry Sauce Clothing.

Businesses that took part say the expo was a huge success for them.

“We’ve actually out sold our New York one,” said Soprovich adding, “This is probably the best convention we’ve been at, even though it’s a lot smaller.”

“We travel the world and go to many events in many different countries so, we’re very pleased that finally there’s an event of this calibre in Edmonton,” said Priestly.

Organizers expected over 10,000 people to pass through the comic convention over the weekend, making it the second biggest in Alberta.
