A party attended by Prince George and Princess Charlotte in Victoria on Thursday had everything a toddler could ask for: balloons, bubbles and pony rides.
But a video released by Kensington Palace on Saturday paints a much darker picture of the children’s party at Government House, according to many Twitter users.
Kensington Palace’s official Twitter account posted a video recapping the kids party. It starts with an upbeat message: “Thank you, Canada. Special moments from Thursday’s children party.”

The message is followed by a darkly-lit video set in slow motion and accompanied by a sparse, downtempo soundtrack. A Government of Canada logo appears at the end of the video.
Twitter users had a field day with the video, describing it as “morose” and “totally creepy.”
British media also piled on. The Mirror described a scene of Prince George staring a large bubble as “not dissimilar to the floating bag in American Beauty” and likened a shot of the Duke of Cambridge waving a bubble wand to “the moment Donnie Darko discovers time portals.”
