Water not cleared to drink at new Mosaic Stadium

Drinking water for fans heading to the new Mosaic Stadium on Saturday will have to come from a bottle as the city requires further testing.

The city made the announcement on Thursday after water samples were tested this week.

According to the city, when the water lines were flushed, debris like gravel and stones were found in the pipes. This affected the water pressure.

Kim Onrait, executive director of city services and major projects, said the incident is normal during the start-up of a new facility.

“It is not clear at this time how the debris got into the pipes but until further notices, we are restricting the water for public consumption,” Onrait said.

Signs telling fans not to drink the water will be posted at the entrances to all 23 washrooms on the main concourse and over the sinks. Washroom attendants will also be available to tell people about the advisory.

The city will have water tankers on location during the first test game on Oct. 1, where the University of Regina Rams will play the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. Bottled water will also be available for sale and fans can bring non-alcoholic sealed drinks under 591 millilitres.

Mayor Michael Fougere said further water samples have been sent to a provincial lab and results should be available Friday.

“The purpose of testing is to catch potential problems and we did. That’s good,” Fougere said.

“This is isolated to the stadium and we have a back-up plan to deal with this.”
