EDMONTON – It was his hair that gave Justin Bieber away.

Fresh from his concert Friday night at Calgary’s Saddledome, Bieber and his girlfriend, Selena Gomez, strolled into the Blue Plate Diner in downtown Edmonton just after 12:30 Saturday afternoon. He was dressed in black from head to toe, the bandana around his neck covering the bottom half of his face.

“I didn’t know who it was, but my staff knew right away,” said owner John Williams. “They said it was the hair that did it.

“It was like he was trying to be incognito, but it wasn’t a very good disguise.”

The appearance of the 18-year-old heartthrob – he’s playing at Rexall on Monday – had the expected reaction. Within seconds, patrons in the restaurant spread the word on Twitter and before long, Williams’ restaurant was the hottest ticket in town with 16-year-old girls.

The security guard who came in with the couple – he sat at a different table – asked Williams to keep fans at a distance, and he obliged.

“Basically, I surrounded his table with oldies who didn’t know who he was or didn’t care,” said Williams, who seated the couple in the far corner of the restaurant. “They were well-insulated. No one bothered them.”

Despite the hour, the couple was hungry for breakfast. Gomez, 20, ordered huevos rancheros.

Biebs? He had scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, white toast and hash brown potatoes.

Oh, and chocolate milk.

Williams served the couple himself and said the singer was very polite.

“When I asked him how everything was, he said, ‘Everything’s really good,’” says Williams. “His answers were kind of short but he was very sweet. It was clear he really wanted to be left alone, and I was respectful of that.”

The couple seemed to just “disappear” after about an hour, leaving behind a note at the table vacated by the security guard.

“I think the security guard wrote the note,” says Williams. “It just said, ‘The guy in the tuque (one of Bieber’s bandmates) will pay the bill; thanks for everything.’ “
