XL Foods meat recall expanded

Another health alert has been issued involving XL Foods, the Edmonton firm at the centre of the largest meat recall in Canadian history.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency on Friday night added 10 more items to the list of more than 1,800 that have been pulled from store shelves across Canada and the United States due to the possibility of E. coli contamination.

The items recalled include medium ground beef and filet mignon from markets in Quebec, and hamburgers, ground beef, beef sirloin and ground sirloin from the Longos grocery chain in Ontario.

Health authorities have confirmed 13 cases of E. coli poisoning linked to eating products from XL Foods or associated with the CFIA investigation.

The latest list of recalled products are associated with the same manufacturing dates as previously recalled ground beef products: Aug. 24, 27-29 and Sept. 5. They carry best-before dates ranging from Sept. 12 to as recently as Friday (Oct. 12.) The items in Quebec were sold from Sept. 11 to Oct. 1.

The CFIA is warning consumers not to eat any of the products and to either return them to the store where they were purchased or to throw them out.
