Edmonton centres set up to help summer flood victims

EDMONTON – The city will open two centres next week to help people whose homes were flooded by July storms apply for provincial disaster assistance.

The centres will operate from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at City Hall and the Mill Woods Recreation Centre next Monday to Wednesday, allowing individuals, small business owners and other groups to apply for funding in person.

The province has made $32 million available to people who suffered non-insurable damage, typically water in basements, during four July thunderstorms that flooded at least 1,700 homes, mainly in south Edmonton.

People are asked to bring government-issued photo ID, as well as a letter from their insurance company confirming the losses were uninsurable, a tax assessment and a list of damaged items, if available.

Applicants can also get forms online at aema.alberta.ca or by calling 1-888-671-1111, and can mail them to the Alberta Emergency Management Agency.
