Seven years ago, Grace Ferrall, 11, adopted a special friend from the Nova Scotia SPCA: a cat named Jazzy. This past summer, Jazzy vanished.
“Ten cats in our neighbourhood went missing, all in the space of a month,” said Ferrall. “She just disappeared one day and never came back, which is sad.”
Ferrall says although Jazzy was scared of most people, the pair had a special connection.
“There was just something about her, we really bonded.”
Looking for a way to honour Jazzy’s life, the grade six student came up with a unique idea: a flower send off.
Sunday afternoon, Ferrall held the event near the playground at DeWolf Park in Bedford, N.S., and invited the public. Close to a dozen people showed up for the send off, many with flowers and also photos of their missing cats.
The group threw flowers into the water as a way to say a final goodbye to their animals and recognize the special bond that people share with their cats.
Ferrall says she hopes the event can help comfort others who are feeling sad and disappointed about not knowing what happened to their animals.
