The Pas offering Tolko Industries massive tax break

The Pas' largest employer, Tolko Industries Ltd. is shutting down its doors Dec. 2. The Pas Chamber

Weeks after the biggest employer in The Pas, Man., announced it was shutting down, the town’s mayor is offering the paper mill a massive tax break in hopes it will delay the closure.

In August, Tolko Industries announced it would be shutting its operations in December and laying off more than 300 workers.

Mayor Jim Scott said Tolko leaving would cripple the town’s economy. However, he said he has found a temporary solution by offering them a tax break of $840, 000 a year for three years.

He said the paper mill could save millions of dollars in taxes by not having to pay property tax, business tax or education taxes.

Scott said he has not yet heard back from the company.
