The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) has removed itself from a police-involved shooting in Summerland earlier this summer.
In the early morning hours of July 2 an officer attempted to pull over a vehicle at Rosedale Road and Prairie Valley Road. RCMP said the vehicle headed into a dead-end street at Giant’s Head Mountain parkway.
An altercation between a RCMP officer and the driver of the vehicle led to the officer firing shots.
The vehicle took off and the officer was unharmed.
Several hours later, a man attended the local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound.
The IIO was called in to investigate, but has now released the matter, saying the injuries suffered by the man in question did not meet the criteria of serious harm.
The IIO said that it is only able to investigate incidents involving the use of deadly force, if someone is killed or subjected to serious harm.
The case is now in the hands of the RCMP.
