New rules in Winnipeg for street parking time limits

The City of Winnipeg has some new rules when it comes to parking on the street. File / Global News
WINNIPEG — Starting September 1, the City of Winnipeg's street parking by-laws are changing.

The new system includes changes to street parking time limits and the use of block heater cords.

The biggest change will allow drivers to add 30 minutes to on-street paid parking when their initial maximum time has expired.

If you’ve parked downtown, you’ll know the current time limit in most areas is two hours. Starting Thursday, the time limit will increase to two and a half hours.

That change comes with a catch. Once your maximum time is reached, you’ll have to move your vehicle to a different block and begin your time again.

There’s another change that might not sit well for drivers in the winter months. If your car needs to be plugged in, you will not be permitted to connect an electrical cord or wire that crosses the edge of the street.

Here are some of the other notable changes to the new streamlined parking by-law:
  • A Temporary Recreational Vehicle Permit may be requested to allow you to park your RV for up to three days, rather than the previous one hour limit.
  • Street work signs must be posted 24 hours in advance of scheduled street work rather than the current six hours (in some circumstances).
