Despite a much-welcome win against arch-rivals Toronto FC at the BMO Stadium Saturday night, the Montreal Impact had reason to be upset after a display of poor sportsmanship from Toronto fans.
Impact coach Mauro Biello didn’t mince words following his team’s 1-0 victory, calling the officiating an embarrassment after his team was handed a red card in the 43rd minute.
Montreal fans agreed with Biello, arguing the referee had his back turned to the action and didn’t see what happened.
But perhaps more troubling was the poor sportsmanship displayed by some Toronto FC fans during and after the game.
Toronto FC issued an apology and said they were looking into the matter.
Another tweet, since deleted by its user, showed a video of fans – some with their faces obscured – burning an IMFC scarf, chanting obscenities and giving the finger to the camera.
While some Toronto supporters may have crossed a line, forcing the team to distance itself from its fanbase, Montreal players still found time to celebrate, crediting team spirit for their win over Toronto.
The two teams will meet for final time on Oct. 16 in Montreal.
