An Edmonton motorist was handed a compulsory summons ticket earlier this week after being caught driving 56km/h over the 100km/h speed limit on Anthony Henday Drive.
The driver of a GMC Yukon was stopped by police Wednesday near Manning Drive.

The speeding ticket was just one of thousands of violations caught by Edmonton police during a 24-hour traffic enforcement campaign held Wednesday. A total of 3,583 tickets were handed out to Edmonton drivers during the traffic blitz. That’s up 41 per cent over a similar campaign held in August 2015 when 2,534 violations were issued.

Another lead-footed driver was stopped by officers for travelling 114km/h on the James MacDonald Bridge, which has a speed limit of 60 km/h.
One man now faces more than 20 new charges after he was initially stopped by police because his licence plate didn’t match his vehicle. Police said the man provided a fake name to officers. After a bit of investigating, police discovered the man had 41 warrants for his arrest and he was found in possession of multiple identity documents.

A total of 3,213 speeding tickets were handed out by Edmonton police. Equipment and seat belt violations accounted for 301 of the tickets. Forty-four tickets were issued for automated red light violations and officers charged 25 motorists for Criminal Code offences.
Edmonton police hold 24-hour traffic enforcement campaigns several times throughout the year in hopes of improving safety on the roads.
