York Region cop charged after suspect allegedly assaulted during arrest

A York Regional Police officer faces criminal charges after a suspect was assaulted during an arrest in Toronto earlier this year.

Toronto police said in a statement the officer, who is a member of the York Regional Canine Unit, was assisting in an arrest on March 30 when a male suspect was assaulted.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. in the area of Queen Street W. and Lisgar Street.

Police said officers were chasing a male suspect on foot when he was eventually located behind the Gladstone Hotel.

It was at that point police say the suspect was assaulted.

Const. Michael Partridge, 35, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with one count each of assault with a weapon and assault.

He is scheduled to make a court appearance on Oct. 27.

York Regional Police Const. Laura Nicolle told Global News Wednesday that Chief Eric Jolliffe was advised of the incident and asked Toronto police to conduct an investigation.

Partridge joined the police service in December 2009, before working with the K-9 unit in 2015.
