“It’s pretty typical in the summer months for us to see really large numbers of cats,” Jocelyn Wady with the Edmonton Humane Society said. “It is kitten season and so we see a lot of litters that come into the facility.”

There are over 500 cats in the facility right now.

“So what that means (is) right now we cannot take in anymore healthy stray cats or owner surrender cats,” Wady added.

Saturday’s event offered free cat adoptions for all felines six months of age or older.

“No adoption fees whatsoever on adult cats and you also get 25 per cent off your licence with the city for all animals adopted today,” Wady said.

The Campus Carnival event also included a rare look at the Humane Society’s veterinary hospital.

“It’s really a special day because it isn’t very often that people get to have a behind the scenes look at what we do here,” Wady said.

“We just want everybody to see the scope and the depth of what we do at the Edmonton Humane Society and of course how we work with the City of Edmonton to make sure that the animals in Edmonton and surrounding area get the care they need,” she added.
