Fall 2017 trial for man accused of killing Calgary mother Jessica Newman

The man accused of killing Calgary mother Jessica Newman will stand trial for second-degree murder next fall.

A five-week trial was scheduled Friday that will begin with a voir dire Oct. 30, 2017 followed by jury selection Nov. 2. A voir dire is a trial within a trial to determine if the evidence heard will be allowed into the trial proper.

Kevin Rubletz, 31, consented to stand trial on the first day of a preliminary inquiry in June.

Newman was Rubletz’s ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child.

She disappeared in March 2015.

Eight weeks later, her body was found in a ditch northeast of Calgary.
