U.S. swimmer Ryan Lochte’s tall tale about a dramatic armed robbery in Rio De Janerio has become an international incident; one that some believe could have been prevented by a cardinal life rule – don’t lie to your mother.

You see, it all started when Lochte claimed he and three teammates were in a taxi when they were pulled over by armed men claiming to be police. Originally, he said the attackers held them at gunpoint and told them to get on the ground before robbing them.

We now know that Lochte embellished the story after he and his teammates vandalized a gas station bathroom while intoxicated. This came to light after police released security camera footage of the incident.

However, Lochte and his teammates didn’t call the police after the incident.

Officers only began investigating once they saw media reports in which Lochte’s mother spoke about the robbery.

The entire scandal has seemingly reinforced the age-old advice handed down to children all over the world.

On Friday, Lochte apologized for his behaviour during the incident, saying he should have been more candid when he described what happened.

“I want to apologize for my behaviour last weekend – for not being more careful and candid in how i described the events of that early morning and for my role in taking the focus away from the many athletes fulfilling their dreams of participating in the Olympics,” he wrote in a lengthy Instagram post.

This, in turn, led to more mom jokes.
