Metro Vancouver crews are continuing their work on repairing a broken water main near Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park.
The broken pipe is one of the main regional supply lines that feeds drinking water to the west side of the city and has been leaking for six weeks.
The water leaking is chlorinated but it is being de-chlorinated, tested and monitored by city staff to ensure no chlorinated water reaches Lost Lagoon.
The city said Lost Lagoon is not expected to be “negatively impacted” by the spilling water.
This past weekend crews were able to pinpoint the location, nature and orientation of the leak and are now preparing plans to complete the repair. According to Metro Vancouver, the pipe was installed in the 1930s and has not been problematic but that crews did find corrosion at the leak.
The situation is proving tricky for repair crews since the area of the leak is very constrained.
City officials said the next phase of the repair will happen as soon as possible and involve welding a steel plate to the water main around the location of the leak. During the time of the repairs, water pressure to residents will be normal and the city is working with the Ministry of Transportation to keep the impact to traffic at a minimum.
How much water is leaking?
The daily water demand for the region is 1.5 billion litres per day and the initial estimate of the leak is at 430,000 litres a day, at a cost of about $300 per day.
Metro Vancouver said there’s a good supply of water and they do not believe the water that has been leaking out for the past several weeks will mean there’s any type of water restrictions coming into effect.
