EDMONTON – Neill Armstrong, a former head coach of the Edmonton Eskimos, has died at the age of 90.
The Eskimos announced Wednesday that Armstrong died Aug. 10.
“The Edmonton Eskimos extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends,” the club said in a statement on its website.
Armstrong served as Edmonton’s head coach from 1964-69, leading the club to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons (1966-68) while posting a 37-56-3 overall record.
Armstrong, a native of Tishomingo, Okla., spent five seasons (1947-51) with the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles as a receiver and defensive back. He was a member of two NFL championship teams (1948-49) before joining the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1951, 1953-54).
Armstrong entered the coaching ranks in 1962 as an assistant with the NFL’s Houston Oilers. He also spent time with the Minnesota Vikings (1970-77) before becoming the Chicago Bears head coach (1978-81).
Armstrong finished his coaching career as an assistant with the Dallas Cowboys (1982-89) and amassed an overall record of 67-90-3 as a head coach.
