RCMP, province join forces to enforce Orange Zone safety

The RCMP and provincial government are teaming up to improve safety in highway construction zones with traffic blitzes in the busiest Orange Zones in Saskatchewan.

This comes after concerns with speeding in construction zones following the death of 18-year-old Ashley Richards.

Richards was killed in an Orange Zone last month near Weyburn while working as a flag person.

It was her first day on the job.

“Our government will not tolerate speeding through the Orange Zone,” said Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris.

“Our first priority is to keep our highway workers safe.”

The speed limit in those zones is 60 km/h, with fines starting at $140 and increasing by two-dollars for every km/h over the speed limit.

For speeders caught doing over 90 km/h, the fine increases by four-dollars for every km/h over the speed limit.

“We need the motoring public to understand that they play a key role in keeping construction workers safe,” said Inspector Andy Landers, the officer in charge of traffic services for “F” division.

Over the Labour Day weekend, RCMP were out in full force on the province’s major highways, handing out over 600 tickets in the central region alone.

McMorris said more measures to target drivers and protect workers will be announced in the coming weeks.
