Winnipeg swimmer Chantal Van Landeghem came up short in her women’s 50m freestyle medal bid at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The 22-year-old failed to advance to the final on Friday after placing 10th in the semifinals with a time of 24.61. Her finish was 0.08 seconds short of a qualifying berth. The top eight swimmers advance to Saturday’s medal race.
Van Landeghem earned a spot in the semifinals by touching the wall in 24.57 seconds to finish in a tie for eighth in Friday morning’s preliminaries.
She placed fourth in the same event at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto.

The Olympic rookie helped Canada capture its first medal of the Rio Games last week by winning bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay. Van Landeghem also placed 10th in the 100m freestyle semifinals.
