Rio 2016: Brazilian rugby player says ‘yes’ to surprise marriage proposal from her girlfriend

Brazilian women’s rugby player Isadora Cerullo didn’t win a gold medal but the 25-year-old received the surprise of a lifetime after her girlfriend proposed to her on-field at Rio’s Deodoro Stadium on Monday.

Following Australia’s win over New Zealand in the first women’s rugby sevens event in Olympic history, Cerullo’s partner, 28-year-old Marjorie Enya, walked onto the field and asked Cerullo to marry her.

Cerullo said ‘yes’ and the happy couple sealed the announcement with a kiss in front of cheering athletes, fans, and stadium workers.

“As soon as I knew she was in the squad I thought I have to make this special,” Enya told the BBC. “I know rugby people are amazing and they would embrace it.”

The BBC reports the couple have been together for two years and live in Sao Paulo. Cerullo has dual Brazilian-U.S. citizenship and was studying in the U.S. before being selected Brazil’s Olympic squad.

Brazil finished 9th in the tournament after beating Japan 33-5 in their final match.

Enya, who works as a manager at Deodoro Stadium, said she wanted her proposal to show the world that “love wins.”

“She is the love of my life,” Enya said. “The Olympic Games can look like closure but for me it’s starting a new life with someone.

“I wanted to show people that love wins.”

Meanwhile, Canada won its first ever bronze medal in Olympic women’s rugby sevens on Monday beating Great Britain 33-10.
