Hundreds of players hit the ball diamond in Stony Plain this weekend to participate in a slow-pitch tournament honouring Peter Schiemann.
“Everybody that’s out here is here for the right reason, to raise money for charity and just have fun,” tournament organizer Darcy Carter said.
Schiemann was one of four RCMP officers killed in the line of duty in Mayerthorpe in 2005.

The annual tournament raises money for a variety of children’s charities including Kidsport.
“He was involved in the D.A.R.E. program which is drug and alcohol resistance and he was instrumental in getting that program going in Mayerthorpe before the tragedy happened,” Carter said.
Sixteen teams from across northern Alberta take part and Carter says the purpose couldn’t be more timely.
“The reason why we’re here is to remember fallen officers who’ve given their lives in the line of duty and with recent events down in the United States – it’s a thing that we’ve got to remember, these officers go out there day in and day out to protect us,” Carter said.
The event runs Saturday and Sunday.
